Kerby, OR
Kerby is a census-designated place (CDP) in Josephine County, Oregon. The community has a population of over 600 people. Kerby was founded at the peak of Josephine County gold mining and went through several name changes in its first few years. On January 22, 1856, Josephine County was established and a new county seat was to be chosen in the next county election. One of the polling places listed for the new county seat was called “Kirbey’s Ranch.” James Kerby and Samuel Hicks, who owned a general mercantile and supply business, probably founded the town of Kerbeyville for the county seat race, and the town was selected as the county seat in the election of June 1857.
